Leopard 1A3

  • still the only true A3 kit available
  • an alternative to this kit would be to use a Revell or Italeri hull with little modification and the excellent 1A3 turret from Perfect Scale Modellbau (see notes below on item 35020)

Leopard 1A4

• Italeri 224 - also released as Revell H-2126 in Germany
  • the best Leopard 1A4 available for nearly three decades, but it is starting to show its age (the industry has evolved a lot in the past 30 years)
  • despite its age, it is quite a good kit ... the weld line detail is quite nice (for example)
  • the hull parts of this kit are the basis for all Italeri and Revell Leopard 1 kits
  • the vinyl tracks are very stiff, and it is hard to get them to conform to the road wheels realistically
• Tamiya 35112
  • of a similar vintage as the Italeri A4 but clearly inferior in details and parts
• Academy 1312/TA028
  • a poor quality copy of the Tamiya kit
• Heller 81136 (new edition kit number)
  • scrap, even the second edition kit with metal parts

Leopard 1A5

• Revell 3028
  • cooperative effort with Italeri
  • turret front is wrong, and there are no mounts for the very nicely rendered applique armour
  • a generally nice kit, and still one of the best Leopard 1 kits available in plastic

1A1A1 / A5

• Peddinghaus EPHS 293
  • resin and white-/metal replacement turret set (or a conversion, depending on one's perspective)
  • not easy to build, but better detailed and more correctly shaped turret than the Revell offering
  • includes proper mounts for the turret applique armour
  • the applique armour does not include the distinctive dimpled pattern
  • much better than any existing plastic turrets, but still not perfect (I know, picky picky)
